Why it matters
Every town remodels a little differently.
Local permits
Building, electrical and plumbing permits are issued by each city or town, and each has its own forms, fees and inspection process.
Historic review
Many Greater Boston communities have local historic districts and demolition delay rules that can apply to exterior changes.
ADU rules
State law now allows one ADU by right in single-family zoning districts in most communities, but local rules still shape the details. Boston sets its own ADU rules.
Housing stock
From Boston brownstones and triple-deckers to suburban Colonials and mid-century homes, the house itself decides much of the plan.
